Thats So Gay, Get Over It
Ok so this really bothers me enough where i have to vent this out.
So im watching Fox 11 tonight and this commercial comes on where 3 teenagers are sitting at a restaurant and one makes a comment about the waiters clothes at how funny they were and said “that’s so gay.”
Suddenly Wanda Sykes stands up and starts going off on the kid about how offensive it is to say “that’s so gay” to describe something as being stupid. She then turns and starts making fun of the boy for being a 16 year old white boy with a sketchy mustache WTF!!!
Ok lets break this down:
Gay as defined by the dictionary:
1. is having or showing a merry, lively mood: gay spirits; gay music.
2. bright or showy: gay colors; gay ornaments.
3. given to or abounding in social or other pleasures: a gay social season.
4. licentious; dissipated; wanton: The baron is a gay old rogue with an eye for the ladies.
5. homosexual.
6. of, indicating, or supporting homosexual interests or issues: a gay organization.
Describing the mans clothes as stated at the beginning of the commercial and saying it is gay is using the word in its proper context as a descriptive word. It was obvious that the boy wasn’t saying that the man likes to partake in homosexual activities, just that his clothes were flashy.
The fact that Wanda Sykes, a black female has to come in and obviously doesnt understand the definition of the word and the context it was used in has to resort to making fun of the boys appearance with the mustache comment and making a negativly racial statement about the boys race (being white) is totally inapropriate and clearly shows the ignorance of the writers of this commercial.
Also I have known many people who are homosexual who use the term “thats so gay” and not with any homosexual undertones.
People just cant start saying that you cant use a word or phrase when it is used in the proper syntax just because others arent educated enough to understand all the different definitions a word may have.
i agree!!! my best friend is gay and he gets so offended when someone says this. then he argues it is ok for him to say it because he is gay. that doesn’t help his arguement at all. gay people are saying the phrase is being used as another way to say something is stupid right? but then its ok for one gay person to say another person is stupid? make up your minds!
People have a real tendency to COMPLETELY over-react to things. *I* am a gay man and, frankly, could care less about this statement. My comment to those saying it (just for shits, mind you) is “my people had nothing to do with it.” Usually that gets a bit of a laugh and lets people know that it’s going to take more than something so tiny and trivial to offend me. It’s those sitting about waiting for something ELSE to be outraged about who are so terribly offended. Ugh.
